Persona 4 Revival vs Persona 4 Golden

Every difference below is one Atlus has actually confirmed, with the announcement that confirmed it linked on the row. Changes people expect but Atlus has not stated are deliberately absent — this table is meant to be the thing you can quote in an argument.

Combat

Baton Pass

Persona 4 Golden
Persona 4 Golden had no Baton Pass. Hitting a weakness or landing a critical knocked a Shadow down and granted the attacker a '1 More' extra turn, but that extra turn always stayed with the character who earned it and could not be handed to an ally.
Persona 4 Revival
A 1 More can be passed to another party member instead of being used by the attacker. The official site states: "During a 1 More, you can pass an extra attack to another party member. Using this technique allows you to knock down multiple enemies in a row." The Japanese site names it バトンタッチ (Baton Touch).

Guarding and encounter setup

Persona 4 Golden
Golden's battle menu included a Guard command that reduced the damage a character took that turn, but guarding had no effect on the attacker. In the field, encounters were set up by striking a roaming Shadow with your weapon before it noticed you to take the first turn; being struck first handed the advantage to the Shadows. There was no way to block a Shadow's field attack.
Persona 4 Revival
Successfully guarding a Shadow's attack now staggers it. Official English text: "Successfully blocking a Shadow's attack allows you to stun them. While exploring, you can also land the first strike on foes or avoid combat altogether." The Japanese wording ties the two together — while the Shadow is defenceless (無防備になった隙に) you can either launch a pre-emptive strike or escape the encounter entirely. On the official broadcast the mechanic was framed for exploration: if you miss the chance to strike a Shadow first, you can Guard to stun it and still take the advantage when combat starts.

Prime Time (ボコスカラッシュ)

Persona 4 Golden
Golden had no charge gauge or limit-break state. Skills always cost SP or HP, enemy elemental resistances always applied, and there was no mechanic granting consecutive actions.
Persona 4 Revival
A gauge fills during battle and, at maximum, activates Prime Time: "a new technique that lets you perform consecutive actions and unleash skills without any cost. On top of that, Prime Time lets you ignore enemy resistances and freely perform Baton Passes."

Sending Enemies Flying / "Nice Shot" (ふっとばし)

Persona 4 Golden
In Golden a status ailment applied only to the Shadow that received it. Attacking an already-ailing enemy produced no additional effect, and ailments never transferred between enemies.
Persona 4 Revival
Attacking a Shadow that is already suffering a status ailment can knock it into another Shadow: "Attacking a Shadow inflicted with a status ailment may send it flying into another Shadow, dealing damage and inflicting it with the same status ailment." The Japanese site calls it 新戦術「ふっとばし」 and states it triggers at a set probability.

Series Finale (ボコスカフィニッシュ)

Persona 4 Golden
The only cinematic finisher in Golden was the party-wide All-Out Attack, available when every enemy on screen was knocked down. There was no individual per-character showstopper move.
Persona 4 Revival
A Prime Time sequence is capped with a Series Finale: the official site says to "unleash a stylish Series Finale to dish out significant damage", and the Japanese site describes ド派手な「ボコスカフィニッシュ」 dealing extra-large damage.

Visuals and presentation

Animated cutscenes

Persona 4 Golden
Golden used a limited number of pre-rendered anime cutscenes — the opening title sequence and a handful of key story beats. The rest of the story played out with in-engine models and 2D character portraits over text.
Persona 4 Revival
Cutscenes are one of the four pillars SEGA names as rebuilt ("enhanced graphics, UI, combat, and cutscenes"). At Anime Expo 2026 ATLUS West announced that "All animation cutscenes in Persona 4 Revival will be produced by the renowned Japanese animation studio, MAPPA" — i.e. every animated cutscene in the game, not just an opening.

Character model proportions

Persona 4 Golden
Golden's in-game character models were low-polygon and, in the development team's own description, deformed or 'chibi' in proportion.
Persona 4 Revival
Models have been rebuilt with realistic human proportions. Wada and Soejima stated in an on-record Anime Expo 2026 interview that "models have been revamped into fully formed human proportions as opposed to the deformed, 'chibi' ones".

Dungeon art direction

Persona 4 Golden
Golden's TV-world dungeons, including Yukiko's Castle and Heaven, were procedurally generated from a per-dungeon tileset and rendered in PlayStation Vita-era environment art.
Persona 4 Revival
Wada and Soejima stated on record that Yukiko's dungeon and Heaven have both received visual revamps, and that a dungeon's visuals now change as the player progresses through it. Individual floor layouts have not been described.

Rebuilt Inaba and environment art

Persona 4 Golden
Golden was a PlayStation Vita title from 2012 (later ported to PC and consoles in 2020 at higher resolution). Inaba's town, school and shopping district were built from low-polygon environment art authored for handheld hardware.
Persona 4 Revival
Environments are rebuilt rather than up-scaled. SEGA's press release describes "enhanced graphics, UI, combat, and cutscenes — all reimagined through a modern lens", and the official feature page promises "Clear blue skies, sun-kissed rivers, and rainy streets await you in the new-and-improved Inaba."

User interface

Persona 4 Golden
Golden used the 2012 Vita interface — a fixed yellow-and-black menu system designed for a 960x544 handheld screen, carried over essentially unchanged into the 2020 PC and console ports.
Persona 4 Revival
The UI is one of the four things SEGA explicitly names as rebuilt: "enhanced graphics, UI, combat, and cutscenes — all reimagined through a modern lens." No breakdown of individual menus has been published yet.

English voice cast

Persona 4 Golden
Golden's English dub was recorded for the 2012 Vita release and largely reused the 2008 Persona 4 cast, including Johnny Yong Bosch as the protagonist and Yuri Lowenthal as Yosuke.
Persona 4 Revival
The English dub is entirely recast. ATLUS's own character trailers, linked from the official SPECIAL page, are titled with the new actors: "Persona 4 Revival - Chie Satonaka VA: Anne Yatco", "- Yosuke Hanamura VA: Paul Castro Jr." and "- Rise Kujikawa VA: Abby Trott". Nazeeh Tarsha voices the protagonist.

Japanese voice cast

Persona 4 Golden
Golden's Japanese cast comprised Daisuke Namikawa (protagonist), Showtaro Morikubo (Yosuke), Yui Horie (Chie), Ami Koshimizu (Yukiko) and Rie Kugimiya (Rise), among others.
Persona 4 Revival
The same Japanese actors are credited on the official character pages for all five characters published so far, so the Japanese cast is unchanged for them. Characters without a published Revival page are not covered by this row.

Lead vocalist

Persona 4 Golden
Shihoko Hirata performed the vocal tracks in Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden, including 'Pursuing My True Self' and 'Reach Out to the Truth'.
Persona 4 Revival
Shiori Sasaki, a newcomer to the series, is the lead vocalist. The developers said in an on-record interview that the vocalist was changed so the soundtrack would feel "both nostalgic, but new at the same time".

Music rearrangement and new tracks

Persona 4 Golden
Golden shipped Persona 4's 2008 soundtrack plus a set of tracks newly written for the Vita release, in their original game-length forms.
Persona 4 Revival
Existing music is remixed and brand-new tracks are added alongside it: the official site promises "remixes of familiar tunes and a set of brand-new tracks", and the Japanese site heads the section サウンドのリファイン (sound refinement). Rearranged versions were played in the June 18, 2026 broadcast. On the official broadcast Wada stated the team "refined all of the original tracks while preserving their core appeal", with every vocal and battle track rearranged into a full-length version.

Opening theme

Persona 4 Golden
Golden opened with an animated title sequence set to a Shoji Meguro vocal track performed by Shihoko Hirata.
Persona 4 Revival
A brand-new opening theme has been written for the remake, alongside new battle music. Wada stated on the official broadcast that the team "refined all of the original tracks while preserving their core appeal" and that new original compositions — including opening and battle music — were added.

Social Link voice acting

Persona 4 Golden
Golden voiced the main story's major scenes but left Social Link conversations largely as unvoiced text, with only scattered voiced lines.
Persona 4 Revival
Voice acting is added to Social Links. Official site: "The main story has been re-recorded, with voice acting also added for Social Links and a host of new events." The Japanese site describes event scenes, community (コミュ) scenes and new events all being newly recorded. On the official broadcast ATLUS stated that all voice acting has been newly recorded and that every Social Link and added event, including minor ones, is fully voiced.

New and expanded content

Marie and the Golden content baseline

Persona 4 Golden
Marie was created for Persona 4 Golden in 2012 and did not exist in the 2008 PlayStation 2 Persona 4; she came with her own Social Link and additional story content.
Persona 4 Revival
Revival is built on the Golden version rather than the PS2 original, and Marie has a dedicated page in the official 'Other Characters' section with Kana Hanazawa credited — the same Japanese actor as in Golden. Ari Thrash voices her in the new English dub.

New seasonal and character events

Persona 4 Golden
Golden's calendar carried a fixed set of seasonal events, several of which Golden itself added over the 2008 PlayStation 2 original — the winter ski trip, scooter riding and Marie's Social Link among them.
Persona 4 Revival
Further events are added on top of Golden's calendar: "Enjoy never-before-seen seasonal events and spend even more time with the other characters." The Japanese site specifies both season-specific events and events that show more of the characters. Individual events have not been detailed.

Script modernisation

Persona 4 Golden
Golden ships the original Persona 4 script as written in 2008, including passages the development team now describes as dated — they cite Yosuke's insensitivity as an example.
Persona 4 Revival
The team states the core of the characters, their thoughts and their stories is retained from the original, with some elements "brushed up to make things more appropriate and to modernize certain elements". No list of changed lines has been published.
