Should you play Persona 4 Golden, or wait for Revival?

Last updated

Our call

Play Golden now. The only thing it costs you is the surprise.

Revival is a remake of Golden, not a sequel and not a different story — same murder, same cast, same year in Inaba, with Marie and the Golden-era additions carried over. What Revival rebuilds is how that story plays, looks and sounds.

So the question is not whether you would spoil the game for yourself; it is whether you would rather meet this story now, or meet it in a few months with better combat and a new coat of paint. There is comfortably enough time to do both.

Everything else on this page is sourced and dated. This block is the one place where we are giving you an opinion rather than a fact, which is why it is marked and why it does not carry a citation — there isn’t one to give.

You almost certainly have time

The most common reason people wait is a worry they will not finish in time. Here is the arithmetic, using the published figures and the announced release date.

Days left
180
until
Golden, main story
67h 49m
typical; 46h 43m – 121h 59m
That works out to
23 min/day
134h 24m for everything

What Revival actually changes

We track 21 officially confirmed differences between Revival and Golden. 18 of them are combat, visuals or audio — how the story is told. 3 touch the content itself: Revival is built on Golden rather than the 2008 original, it adds seasonal and character events on top of Golden’s calendar, and the script has been modernised in places without changing who the characters are.

That ratio is the whole decision. If Revival were rewriting the story, waiting would be obvious. It is rebuilding the telling.

Which one are you?

Play Golden now if…

  • · You have never played Persona 4 in any form.
  • · You want to play it on hardware you already own — Golden is out now, Revival is PS5, Xbox Series and PC only.
  • · You would rather have two playthroughs a few months apart than one.
  • · You enjoy noticing what a remake changed. That only works if you know the original.

Wait for Revival if…

  • · A first playthrough is precious to you and you only want one.
  • · A 2012 handheld game’s presentation is a real barrier for you — that is exactly what Revival rebuilds.
  • · You have a backlog that will comfortably fill the months anyway.
  • · You already played Golden. Then there is nothing to decide; Revival is the reason to return.

If you are starting Golden

Everything here is built for a first playthrough, and none of it spoils the story beyond the systems you are asking about.
