Persona 4 Golden Missables — Everything You Can Lose

Updated

Golden has three tiers of loss, and conflating them is the usual failure of missables articles. Tier 1 is recoverable in the same playthrough (a failed rescue offers a rewind). Tier 2 is lost for the playthrough but recoverable in New Game+ (most books, most quests, most Social Links). Tier 3 is a branch you cannot un-choose without replaying (the 12/3 and 12/5 decision points, the 3/20 answer). A guide page should say which tier each item is in.

Golden-only gates

These do not exist in the PS2 original, so older guides will not warn you about them.

Aeon and the Hollow Forest
Meet Marie in the Velvet Room (her Aeon link opens 4/18) > rank the link to 10 > do so BEFORE Adachi and Ameno-sagiri fall at the end of Magatsu Inaba > the Hollow Forest dungeon appears on 2/13 during the ski trip > clear it to rescue Marie > finish the True Ending on 3/20 to get the Golden epilogue on top. Every other Social Link in Golden has its deadline pushed into late January or February by the added months. Marie's does not — hers closes in December, at a moment the game presents as a triumph rather than a deadline. A player who is pacing themselves against the February deadlines will lose the Golden content without ever seeing a warning.
The Jester/Hunger Social Link and the Accomplice Ending — neither
The Jester/Hunger Social Link and the Accomplice Ending — neither exists in the PS2 game, so no vanilla missables list mentions them.
The January and February content generally
The January and February content generally. A vanilla-era 'things you can miss' article ends at December and will tell a Golden player that links are lost which in fact have two more months to run.
Bug catching, gardening, the scooter and Shichiri Beach — all Golden
Bug catching, gardening, the scooter and Shichiri Beach — all Golden additions, and each one is attached to quests or stat sources that a vanilla list has no reason to mention.

Month by month

April

  • Yukiko's Castle rescue deadline

The fog arrives on 4/29. Failing it kills Yukiko and triggers a game over, but the game offers a rewind to before the deadline.

  • Expert Study Methods goes on sale

Not missable — the bookshop keeps it in stock. It is listed here because its VALUE is time-limited: it permanently boosts study gains, so every week you delay is study progress you never get.

May

  • The Witch Detective book

Comes from a Strength Social Link hangout invitation. Requires the Steamy Bathhouse cleared and the Strength link at the right early rank. If you decline the invitation or the link is at the wrong rank, the book is gone for the playthrough.

  • Gardening becomes available

Not missable, but it feeds quest 25 (three home-grown cabbages) and quest 38 (Barrier Corn), both of which need crops to actually mature. Starting late can make those quests impractical rather than impossible.

  • Fox quest chain opens at the Tatsuhime Shrine

The Hermit Social Link is entirely made of the Fox's nine requests, and the last one requires catching both Guardian fish. That in turn requires the bug net, which requires a night shrine visit, which requires Courage 2. Starting this chain late is the most common reason Hermit ends the year unmaxed.

June

  • Steamy Bathhouse rescue deadline

The fog arrives on 6/4, which is the last day to clear Steamy Bathhouse (Kanji). It opens around mid-May, so that is the window you have.

  • Quest 30, Please Find My Younger Twin, becomes available

This is the head of the twins chain (30 > 35 > 36 > 43 > 52 > 53). Every quest in the chain dies on 11/17, so skipping this one in June silently deletes five later quests.

  • Bug net chain at the shrine

Needs Courage 2 to visit the shrine at night. Without the bug net there is no bait, and without bait there is no Guardian fish and no maxed Hermit link.

July

  • Marukyu Striptease rescue deadline

The fog arrives on 7/9, which is the last day to clear Marukyu Striptease (Rise). It opens around 6/25, so that is the window you have.

  • The Poly-Land book

A Strength Social Link call invites you to study. Two sources warn that the basketball branch of the Strength link stops issuing these invitations at ranks 5-6, which can lock the book out.

August

  • The O-Cha Way book

A Sunday hangout with the Strength Social Link. One source states this specifically requires having chosen the SOCCER team rather than basketball, which makes the club choice back in April quietly decide whether a full book collection is possible.

  • Void Quest rescue deadline

The fog arrives on 8/12, which is the last day to clear Void Quest (Mitsuo). It opens around 7/29, so that is the window you have.

  • The Divine Way book at the Summer Festival

You must attend the festival WITH someone. Going alone forfeits the book permanently for that playthrough.

  • Summer festival wish

Wishing for good grades is reported as +10 Knowledge, a one-off.

September

  • Secret Laboratory opens

Secret Laboratory (Naoto) becomes available around 9/16. This is the start of the rescue window, not the deadline — that falls on 10/5.

October

  • Secret Laboratory rescue deadline

The fog arrives on 10/5, which is the last day to clear Secret Laboratory (Naoto). It opens around 9/16, so that is the window you have.

  • Adachi (Jester) Social Link event

After the threshold is met, later Jester ranks arrive automatically. Missing it forecloses the Accomplice route.

November

  • Adachi (Jester) must be Rank 6

Adachi's link has a rank checkpoint in early November. Sources disagree on both the required rank and the exact cutoff date, so aim to be comfortably ahead of it rather than timing it precisely.

  • Heaven opens

Heaven (Nanako) becomes available around 11/6. This is the start of the rescue window, not the deadline — that falls on 11/20.

  • HARD QUEST CUTOFF

Quests 30, 35, 36, 43 and 52 all expire in mid-November, and quest 53 probably does too. This is the single largest cluster of permanently losable content outside the Social Links, and nothing in the game warns you about it. The exact day is reported by only one source, so treat the whole middle of the month as the cutoff.

  • Heaven rescue deadline

The fog arrives on 11/20, which is the last day to clear Heaven (Nanako). It opens around 11/6, so that is the window you have.

  • World Class Bugs goes on sale

Not missable, but late enough that its bug-yield bonus has limited runway.

December

  • Fool (Investigation Team) Social Link deadline

After this point the characters stop being available and the link can no longer be raised. Day-level dates are reported by only one source, so we give the month — finish the ranks you want earlier in it rather than on the last possible evening.

  • The 12/3 hospital decision and dialogue chain

Pushing Namatame into the TV ends the game immediately. Failing the follow-up chain locks in the ending where the culprit is never identified. The full choice sequence is in our true ending guide.

  • Naming Adachi, and the tell-or-protect branch

The branch point that separates the Accomplice route from every good route. It happens on 12/5, immediately after naming Adachi — the full sequence is in our true ending guide.

  • Star (Teddie) Social Link deadline

After this point the characters stop being available and the link can no longer be raised. Day-level dates are reported by only one source, so we give the month — finish the ranks you want earlier in it rather than on the last possible evening.

  • The 'go see Adachi alone' prompt

Guides differ on whether this prompt falls on 12/5 or 12/7 — treat both evenings as decisive.

  • Marie (Aeon) must be Rank 10

THE Golden-exclusive gate. Missing it forfeits the Hollow Forest dungeon in February and the Golden epilogue, and there is no way back in that playthrough.

  • Magatsu Inaba / Judgment deadline

The fog arrives on 12/24, which is the last day to clear Magatsu Inaba. It opens in early December, so that is the window you have.

  • The December time skip

Clearing the dungeon jumps the calendar to 12/23 and eats every free day in between. Anything you wanted to do in mid-December must be done first. This is a deadline that looks like a reward.

January

  • Quests 60-64 unlock

Includes quest 60, Acquire Samegawa's Guardian, which is weather-gated and therefore needs a rainy or snowy day in the remaining calendar.

  • Sun (Yumi or Ayane) Social Link deadline

After this point the characters stop being available and the link can no longer be raised. Day-level dates are reported by only one source, so we give the month — finish the ranks you want earlier in it rather than on the last possible evening.

  • Strength (Kou or Daisuke) Social Link deadline

After this point the characters stop being available and the link can no longer be raised. Day-level dates are reported by only one source, so we give the month — finish the ranks you want earlier in it rather than on the last possible evening.

  • Kashiwagi quest chain

Four consecutive-day quests, each gating the next. Miss a day and the chain stalls.

  • Quest 69, A Student Should Study

This request stops being available later in the year. Our sources agree it expires but not on which day, so finish it when you see it rather than banking on a date.

February

  • Justice (Nanako) deadline

After this point the characters stop being available and the link can no longer be raised. Day-level dates are reported by only one source, so we give the month — finish the ranks you want earlier in it rather than on the last possible evening.

  • Hierophant (Dojima) and Moon (Ai) deadlines

After this point the characters stop being available and the link can no longer be raised. Day-level dates are reported by only one source, so we give the month — finish the ranks you want earlier in it rather than on the last possible evening.

  • Priestess (Yukiko), Hanged Man (Naoki) and Devil (Sayoko) deadlines

After this point the characters stop being available and the link can no longer be raised. Day-level dates are reported by only one source, so we give the month — finish the ranks you want earlier in it rather than on the last possible evening.

  • Chariot (Chie), Fortune (Naoto), Temperance (Eri) and Tower (Shu) deadlines

After this point the characters stop being available and the link can no longer be raised. Day-level dates are reported by only one source, so we give the month — finish the ranks you want earlier in it rather than on the last possible evening.

  • Magician (Yosuke), Emperor (Kanji), Lovers (Rise) and Death (Hisano) deadlines

After this point the characters stop being available and the link can no longer be raised. Day-level dates are reported by only one source, so we give the month — finish the ranks you want earlier in it rather than on the last possible evening.

  • Hollow Forest

GOLDEN-EXCLUSIVE. Only appears if Marie's Aeon link was maxed before the December boss.

  • Valentine's Day

You receive an invitation from every character whose romance route you took, and you can accept only one — the others are rejected on screen.

March

  • 3/20, the final day

Answering 'Yes' to heading home ends the game on the Normal Ending immediately. The whole True Ending chain — goodbyes, the Junes reunion, the flood plain conversation, Igor's orb, the gas station confrontation, and Yomotsu Hirasaka — happens on this one day and nowhere else.

Not tied to a date

  • The Ramen Way book

Awarded after eating at Chinese Diner Aiya eight times. No deadline, but eight visits is eight time slots, so leaving it to February is not realistic.

  • The five quest-reward books

The Gentle Way, The Punk's Way, Guide to Pests, Picross Rules! and Who Am I? come from the Avid Reader quest chain (quests 18, 20, 34, 40, 45). They are only obtainable through those quests, and the chain is strictly sequential — skipping quest 18 in May forfeits all five.

  • The club choice

Picking basketball or soccer in April is permanent for the playthrough and, per one source, decides whether one missable book can be obtained at all.

  • The protagonist's name

Set once at the start and never changeable.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single most missable thing?
The Aeon Social Link chain. Marie’s link must reach Rank 10 before the December story boss, and missing that closes off the Golden-only dungeon and the extended epilogue for that playthrough.
Can I clean everything up in New Game+?
Mostly yes — New Game+ keeps your social stats and compendium, which removes the grind that makes a single run tight. What you cannot recover is the current run’s ending.
Are missed quests gone forever?
Some are. Quests tied to a Social Link close when that link becomes unreachable, and a handful expire on fixed dates regardless of what you have done.

The ending-critical deadlines are covered in more depth in the true ending guide, and expiring quests are flagged in the quest list.
