Persona 4 Golden Romance Guide

Updated

Eight characters can be romanced in Persona 4 Golden. Romance changes scenes and dialogue only — it has no effect on which ending you get or on any persona you can fuse, so this is purely a question of who you want to spend the year with.

Why rank numbers differ between guides

MOST PUBLISHED 'DISAGREEMENTS' ABOUT P4G ROMANCE RANKS ARE A NOTATION ARTIFACT, NOT A FACTUAL DISPUTE. RPG Site labels a romance scene by the transition that triggers it ('Rank 8 > 9'), while TheGamer, Walkthrough Wizard and Hardcore Gamer label the same scene by the rank it lands on ('Rank 9'). Rise 7-vs-8, Marie 8-vs-9, Yumi 9-vs-10 and Naoto 5+7-vs-6+8 all collapse to the same in-game scenes under this rule. The romanceRank field below uses the DESTINATION rank consistently. Listicles that give a single number without this context are the main source of wrong data.

Who you can romance

Chie Satonaka

Chariot · Rank 9
The romance choice
"Will you be my girlfriend?"
Stay friends instead
"I'm counting on you."
If you decline
The link continues on the friendship path and still reaches Rank 10. Only the Rank 10 scene text differs; the key item and the ultimate Persona fusion are unaffected.
Stat requirements
Courage. Sources disagree on the exact thresholds — RPG Site lists Courage 3 at ranks 2>3 and 3>4 and Courage 4 at 6>7; TheGamer lists Courage 3 at ranks 1 and 4; Walkthrough Wizard lists Courage 3 at ranks 3-4 and Courage 4 at rank 7. Build toward Courage 4 to be safe.

Exists in vanilla Persona 4 as well; all data here is from Golden-labelled sources.

Other guides may write this as “Rank 8 > 9” — same scene.

Yukiko Amagi

Priestess · Rank 9
The romance choice
"I really like you."
Stay friends instead
Two non-romance options exist: "You're my classmate." and "You're my friend."
If you decline
The link continues to a friendship Rank 10 ending and still maxes.
Stat requirements
Courage only. THE RANK-3 THRESHOLD IS DISPUTED AND DELIBERATELY NOT ADJUDICATED — see the conflict entry 'yukiko-rank3-courage-requirement'. RPG Site requires Courage 4 at rank 2>3; TheGamer requires Courage 3 at that point.

Exists in vanilla Persona 4 as well; all data here is from Golden-labelled sources.

Other guides may write this as “Rank 8 > 9” — same scene.

Rise Kujikawa

Lovers · Rank 8
The romance choice
"Hold her."
Stay friends instead
"Stand there."
If you decline
Friendship route. The Rank 9 scene is identical on both paths — only Rank 10 differs. The link still maxes.
Stat requirements
Understanding 5 at rank 5>6 is agreed by both sources. RPG Site additionally requires Courage 5 at rank 6>7; TheGamer does not list it. Build to Courage 5 to be safe.

Exists in vanilla Persona 4 as well; all data here is from Golden-labelled sources.

Other guides may write this as “Rank 7 > 8” — same scene.

Naoto Shirogane

Fortune · Rank 6 (flag) and 8 (confession) — TWO gates, not one
The romance choice
Gate 1 at Rank 6: choose "I'm glad you're a girl." to set the romance flag. Gate 2 at Rank 8: when the man draws a knife choose "Protect Naoto", then when asked "Why…!?" choose "Because I love you."
Stay friends instead
At Gate 1, "Your gender doesn't matter." permanently locks friendship. At Gate 2 the friendship options are "Run with Naoto", "Fight back", and "Because we're friends."
If you decline
Friendship route continues through Rank 10 with no block.
Stat requirements
Unlocking the link requires Knowledge 5 (to talk to the man in black in the Northern Shopping District) and Courage 5 (to return to Naoto at school).

The tightest link in the game — it starts in late October and must finish before the story deadline. The widely-reported 'rank 5 and 7' versus 'rank 8' disagreement is the two-gate structure being described under different notations, not a real conflict. Exists in vanilla Persona 4 as well.

Other guides may write this as “Rank 5 > 6, then Rank 7 > 8” — same scene.

Marie

Aeon · Rank 9
The romance choice
"Because I love you." — then you must also choose to hug her to confirm.
Stay friends instead
"Because you're my friend."
If you decline
Friendship route; the link still maxes. Marie is the ONLY romance in the game with a take-back: even after choosing the romance line, declining the hug drops you back onto the friendship route.
Stat requirements
None reported. Progress is story-gated instead — RPG Site states rank 4>5 requires Rise to have joined the Investigation Team (July 24 or later); TheGamer phrases it as being unable to pass rank 5 until after July 24. Extra 'spend the day with her' days are needed between ranks 5-6 and 9-10.

GOLDEN-EXCLUSIVE. Marie does not exist in the 2008 PS2 Persona 4, so this entry carries zero vanilla contamination risk. Maxing her link (romantically OR platonically) unlocks the Hollow Forest dungeon and the Golden epilogue.

Other guides may write this as “Rank 8 > 9” — same scene.

Ai Ebihara

Moon · Rank 10 (the real romance) — with a DECOY at rank 6
The romance choice
The genuine romance choice is at Rank 10 on the Normal Route, where you accept or reject her. At Rank 6 the game offers a 'Temporary Lovers' branch whose accepting options are "I'll be your boyfriend." or, after first picking "……", "Sounds good."
Stay friends instead
To decline the Rank 6 decoy and stay on the route that leads to the real romance, choose "……" or "Are you sure about that?"
If you decline
Declining the Rank 6 decoy is what puts you on the Normal Route toward the actual romance at Rank 10. Declining at Rank 10 gives a platonic finish.
Stat requirements
Requires the Strength link (Fellow Athletes — Kou Ichijo or Daisuke Nagase) at Rank 4, plus Courage 3 before accepting her request to skip class.

The most misreported romance in the game. Any source that gives Ai a single romance rank has collapsed the decoy and the real romance together and should not be trusted. Exists in vanilla Persona 4 as well.

Yumi Ozawa

Sun · Rank 10
The romance choice
"Hug her."
Stay friends instead
"Leave."
If you decline
Nothing is lost mechanically — the link is already at maximum when the choice appears. You simply end platonically. Ranks 1 through 9 are identical on both paths.
Stat requirements
None listed by any of the three sources consulted. Equipping a Sun-arcana Persona grants bonus points.

Latest romance gate in the game. Exists in vanilla Persona 4 as well.

Other guides may write this as “Rank 9 > 10” — same scene.

Ayane Matsunaga

Sun · Rank 8
The romance choice
"Reveal your feelings for her."
Stay friends instead
"Change the subject."
If you decline
Ranks 9 and 10 continue on the friendship path; RPG Site notes they progress automatically. The link still maxes.
Stat requirements
TheGamer lists Courage 2 at rank 1, Understanding 3 at ranks 2, 4 and 7, Courage 3 at rank 4, and Courage 5 for a rank 9 option. RPG Site lists none for the romance choice itself.

Ayane's romance gate is two ranks earlier than Yumi's, making her the safer Sun pick on a tight schedule. Exists in vanilla Persona 4 as well.

Other guides may write this as “Rank 7 > 8” — same scene.

Who you cannot romance

  • Yosuke Hanamura (Magician)

NOT romanceable in any official release of Persona 4 Golden.

A fan mod exists that RESTORES a romance option cut during development. Coverage is explicit that the mod restores removed content rather than adding something new. Any claim that Yosuke is romanceable refers to that mod, never the shipped game — this distinction matters for guide accuracy.

  • Kanji Tatsumi (Emperor)

    NOT romanceable.

  • Teddie (Star)

    NOT romanceable.

  • Sayoko Uehara (Devil)

    NOT romanceable.

  • Eri Minami (Temperance)

    NOT romanceable.

  • Hisano Kuroda (Death)

    NOT romanceable.

Dating more than one person

Valentine's Day — February 14

You receive a Valentine's invitation from every girl whose Social Link you took down the romance route. You can accept only one.

You must pick one and personally reject the others on screen. The rejection scenes are written to land hard — in a recorded playthrough, Rise tells the protagonist she is serious about him and that she hates feeling like a mess around him, and is described as close to tears as he leaves. Player reports also describe a girlfriend you did not choose turning up during the date you did take, producing an argument. RPG Site frames the whole thing as a deliberate payoff: romance more than one character and your lovers eventually find out, producing an exclusive scene where you are caught out.

Christmas Eve — December 24, triggered automatically after Magatsu Inaba is cleared

At least one romance-route Social Link at Rank 10 to get a date at all.

If you are in a romantic relationship with more than one girl you receive multiple messages on December 23 and choose which one to spend December 24 with. This is a forced choice, NOT a confrontation.

Does romance change the ending?

NO on both counts.

Romance appears nowhere in the requirement chain for any ending. The True Ending chain is the 12/3 dialogue, naming Adachi on 12/5, telling your friends, answering 'No' on 3/20, and the final-day sequence through Yomotsu Hirasaka. No romance is required at any point.

Frequently asked questions

Does romance affect the true ending?
Romance appears nowhere in the requirement chain for any ending. The True Ending chain is the 12/3 dialogue, naming Adachi on 12/5, telling your friends, answering 'No' on 3/20, and the final-day sequence through Yomotsu Hirasaka. No romance is required at any point.
Does declining a romance cost me the ultimate persona?
No. Declining keeps the link on the friendship path and it still reaches Rank 10, with the same key item and the same persona unlocked for fusion. Only the scene text differs.
Why do other sites list different ranks for the same romance scene?
MOST PUBLISHED 'DISAGREEMENTS' ABOUT P4G ROMANCE RANKS ARE A NOTATION ARTIFACT, NOT A FACTUAL DISPUTE. RPG Site labels a romance scene by the transition that triggers it ('Rank 8 > 9'), while TheGamer, Walkthrough Wizard and Hardcore Gamer label the same scene by the rank it lands on ('Rank 9'). Listicles that give a single number without this context are the main source of wrong data.
Can I romance more than one character?
Mechanically yes, and nothing blocks it. The cost is social: on Valentine’s Day you must pick one and reject the others on screen, and Christmas Eve changes if you are seeing several people at once.

Getting a link to Rank 10 in the first place is the hard part — the social link guides have the best choice at every rank, and the true ending guide covers the choices that actually do change your ending.
