Persona 4 Golden Fishing Guide

Unlocking fishing

Fishing is not handed to you. It is a four-step fetch chain that ends with an old man at the Samegawa Flood Plain riverbank giving you the River Rod.

Sources place the start of the chain differently — one says the old man appears from 5/1, one says the chain can be started from 4/18, and one describes the window as 'after you finish the first dungeon'. All three describe the same early-game window.

1. Speak to the old man at the riverbank in the Samegawa Flood Plain. He wants a fish hook.
2. Get a Tatsuhime Ladybug from the boy at the Tatsuhime Shrine. He wants a drink first — buy one from the vending machine in the shopping district and give it to him. One source names the drink 'The Natural'; the other gives the price as 120 yen from the machine beside the Konishi liquor store. Both describe the same trade.
3. Take the Tatsuhime Ladybug to the hostess at the Shiroku Pub (the Shiroku Store at night) and trade it for the Fish Hook. One source adds an intermediate step here — showing her a Gem dropped by Bronze Dice shadows in Yukiko's Castle (floors 4-7) — and frames the ladybug as food for her pet fish. The other omits the Gem entirely. Recorded as a possible extra requirement rather than resolved.
4. Return the Fish Hook to the old man at the riverbank. He gives you the River Rod, and fishing at the Samegawa Flood Plain is now open. One source specifies you must come back on a later day (the afternoon after handing over the hook).

Rods

Bait

There are eight bait types: bread crumbs plus seven insects. Bait tier is the main thing that decides which fish you can hook — better bugs hook better fish — so the bug net is effectively a fishing prerequisite for everything above the starter fish.

Weather and season

Weather matters for the rare catches, and only for those. Bait selects the pool of fish; rain (and night) raises the chance of the Guardian-class bites within it.

• Samegawa's / River Guardian: catch on a rainy day. Two sources add snow and/or night as equivalent conditions.
• Sea Guardian: fish on a rainy day or at night at Shichiri Beach with a Genji Beetle.
• Rain is a heavy probability modifier rather than an absolute lock. Player reports do describe rare clear-day bites, but not often enough to plan around.
• Quest 60 (Acquire Samegawa's Guardian) is dated 1/10, so its Guardian catch is attempted in winter, when rain becomes snow.

What fishing is actually for

Full-SP consumables

Both Guardian fish fully restore an ally's SP. In a game where SP is the real constraint on how deep you can push into a dungeon in one day, a stock of these is worth more than most items you can buy.

The Fox / Hermit Social Link

Fox quest 15, the last of the Fox's requests, requires catching both Guardians. That makes fishing a hard prerequisite for maxing the Hermit Social Link — the strongest single reason to engage with the system at all. Fox quest 13 also needs a Red Goldfish.

Weapon quests for Daidara

Quest 32 (6/14) yields the Inaba Trout, a Yosuke weapon. Quest 60 (1/10) yields the Guardian, a Kanji weapon.

Trading for gems, and gems for weapons

Give fish to the Lady in White at the Tatsuhime Shrine at night and she gives gems in return, with which fish you hand over deciding which gem you get. The gems are then exchanged at the Shiroku Pub for party equipment.

Feeding the Samegawa cat

Quests 21, 22 and 61 all consume fish. Quest 61 specifically demands five days of feeding with a different fish each day, which quietly requires you to have a varied catch on hand.

What Golden changed

The minigame itself was rebuilt

Vanilla Persona 4 resolved a catch by button mashing. Golden replaced this with a timed gauge in which you keep a marker inside a moving zone while reeling.

Bug catching was added as a Golden-exclusive activity, and it is the bait supply chain for fishing

Bug catching does not exist in the PS2 game. Because seven of the eight bait types in Golden are caught bugs, the entire bait economy described on a Golden page has no vanilla equivalent.

Shichiri Beach is a Golden-exclusive second fishing location, reachable only by scooter

The beach, the scooter that reaches it, and Okina City are all Golden additions. Every Shichiri Beach fish (Hachiro Octopus, Meguro Tuna, Sea Guardian) and the Deep-Sea Rod that fishes there are therefore Golden-only.

More bait types than the original

Stated directly as a Golden change alongside the new location.

The January quest block is Golden-only by construction

Quest 60, 'Acquire Samegawa's Guardian', falls on 1/10. January does not exist in vanilla Persona 4, so this fishing quest cannot have a vanilla counterpart.
